A clawfooted tub continually overflows with milk. The surface of the liquid quivers to the cadence of a newborn’s wails.
For the first year of my child’s life, I was haunted by this image that relentlessly invaded my thoughts: Water is cascading down the stairs. I’d forgotten my baby in the bathtub. The tub is overflowing, and my baby has long drowned.
